Silicone In The Kitchen
Teflon has been synonymous with non-stick for a number of years but the public has recently learnt the dangers of toxins in overheated Teflon pans which can contaminate food, so manufacturers have been looking for a new material to use in the kitchen. Silicone has been used for over fifty years in the aerospace industry but now it’s found a new lease of life in the kitchen as a replacement for Teflon.
Silicone has a number of advantages for cooking:
Firstly, silicone pans and baking trays are non-stick which means when cooking delicate items, such as cakes, they can be easily removed from the cooking surface without damage. The soft properties of silicone also mean that items can be easily turned out of the silicone bake ware such as pies.
Silicone bake ware is also very flexible. This means that baking trays can be rolled or folded up to fit into small spaces and then ‘spring’ back into shape. This is a great space saving advantage for small kitchens.
The next advantage of silicone pans and bake ware is that it’s really easy to clean and can even be put in the dishwasher for convenience. They also don’t absorb flavours or smells so can’t pass these onto other foods being cooked.
The use of silicone in cookware can reduce cooking times as the heat is isolated. Silicone can also withstand extreme temperatures so does not melt or crack when used for cooking. Silicone bake ware can also be put in the freezer and microwave without causing any damage to its structure.
